Why is the opening scene of "A Pair of Tickets"-the train journey from Hong Kong to Guangzhou-an appropriate setting for June May's remark that she is "becoming Chinese" ?

Although June May is an American by birth and life but her real self is in Guangzhou, China. Thus, when she reached Guangzhou, she exclaims that she is becoming Chinese. Although she was born and brought up in a country far away from her homeland, her cultural and social selves are deeply rooted in China. She is only bringing out that real self. So, people are not where they live but people would still hold their ancestors and ancestry to heart because culture and society are the ones who make a person and not the place where they are born or lived. She would have felt alien both by physical appearance and customs while in America, so her journey to China is only a return journey back to her own place.
