Gill Slits are individual opening that leads to the gills and they do not have an outer cover. They help in connecting the pharynx and helps in passing of water to the exterior side.
- Lamp prey uses their suckers to feed on their prey and using their gill sacs they breathe in and out. They feed generally on either flesh or blood. They use muscles that are connected with the gill slits which help in contraction of muscles causing expulsion of water and helps in inhalation of water.
- In case of branchiostoma, they get their good as they filter it using the water steam that enter the pharyngeal cavity and entry of large particles is prevented with help of the buccal cirri. The pharynx plays an important role and water passes out through gilt slits and hence helps in starting inflow of fresh water current within mouth which helps in feeding. The feeding is done through ciliary mode.
