Many people find that they learn best from experience However, if they don't reflect on their experience, and if they don't consciously think about how they could do better next time, it's hard for them to learn anything at all. This is where Gibb's Reflective Cycle is useful. You can use it to help your people make sense of situations at work, so that they can understand what they did well and what they could do betteo in the future, Description Action 5 X2 Feelings THE REFLECTIVE CYCLE ( Evaluation Conclusions • Description - When I was working on a surgical ward, I was working under the supervision of my mentor, caring for a 72 yo old gentleman, who had undergone abdominal surgery. I removed his wound dressing so that doctor could assess it on the ward round using an non-touch procedure. The doctor come to my patient without washing hand or using alcohol gel first I was concerned the doctor's cuffs could be contaimi nated Before I tried to say anything the doctor started examining my patient. •feelings I was alarmed by this as I had expected the doctor to wash his hand before examining. However, I felt tm intimidated because I felt doctor was more experienced thon me later, I spoke to my mentor. My mentor took the doctor aside and asked him whether he washed his hand

I before examining He said that he had been very busy and hadn't thought about it and assured her that he would Iwash his hand before examining every patient in future. • Evaluation - The incident was extremely challenging for me. I regret that I did not act to challenge the doctor's practice.
