These sulphonamides act by inhibiting the bacterial growth, so they are bacteriostatic. Sulfamethoxazole competes with the PABA (para amino benzoic acid) and inhibit he synthesis of dihydrofolic acid in bacteria. Trimethoprim inhibit the enzyme "dihydrofolate reductase" and thus, the production of tetrahydrofolate" (folic acid synthesis) is inhibited. Trimethoprim is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis in immune-compromised people such as HIV patients and children and also in normal adults, urinary tract infections, infections of intestine and ears, etc.
