Proboscipedia gene is an example of Homeotic gene.

Homeotic genes give segment identity in Drosophila. They encode homeodomain proteins which interact with Hox and other homeotic genes to initiate segment specific gene regulation.

Homeodomain proteins are transcription factors that share a DNA binding domain called homeodomain.

Two clusters of homeotic genes are used to give identity to Drosophila body segment: Antennapedia complex and Bithorax complex. Antennapedia cimplex gives rise to head, 1st and 2nd thoracic segments. It consists of labial, proboscipedia, deformed, sex comb reduced and antennapedia genes. Bithorax complex gives rise to 3rd thoracic segment and abdominal segments. It consists of ultrabithorax, abdominal A and abdominal B genes.
