  • Thermohaline circulations are oceanic circulations that arise as a result of the difference in density in water masses and cause mixing of surface water and deep water. The difference in density occurs due to different temperature and salinity in ocean water.
  • Thermohaline circulations play an important role in the distribution of deep water nutrients, transporting heat, salts and gases.
  • The three major ocean bases are the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Thermohaline circulations leads to movement of water current from northern oceans to southern oceans and back from southern ocean to northern ocean.
