The motor pathway or the pyramidal tract or the corticospinal tract, serves as the motor pathway for upper motor neuronal signals coming primitive brainstem motor nuclei and from the cerebral cortex. It is the set of internal processes associated with motor adaptation, skill acquisition, and decision-making leading to relatively permanent changes in the capability for skilled behavior. This process mainly consists of 3 stages: cognitive stage, the associative stage, and the autonomous stage. This processes are depends on the functional activity and structural integrity of the cerebellum and cortico-striatal loop.

The motor learning begins with the cognitive stage or the verbal-motor stage and the processing of information.This stage involves information processing because it involves the conveyance (verbal) and acquisition (cognition) of new information. In this stage, the person is trying to process information to cognitively understand the paremeters and requirements of motor movement. Person ingests information and organizes it into some meaningful form that will ultimately lead to the creation of a motor program.

The associative stage or the motor stage involves less verbal information, smaller gains in performance, conscious performance, adjustment making, awkward and disjointed movement, and taking a long time to complete.

In this stage, the motor performance becomes largely automatic, where cognitive processing demands are minimal, and persons are capable of attending to and processing other information.
