Purple sulfur bacteria are aerobic or microaerophilic, that is they can't sustain in high oxygen concentration but they need oxygen for fermentation and respiration. Green sulphur bacteria on the other hand are obligatory anaerobic, so they can't survive in oxygen. So, in depth areas, green sulphur bacteria can grow but in purple sulfur bacteria, the synthesis of photopigments get hampered by low conc. of oxygen, thereby depriving from its main source of energy.
