How does chemotaxis work for a attractant scenario for E. coli . Show (use diagrams, figures, any kind of prop) what happens as the bacterium moves up (or down) a chemical gradient, including the role of receptors, MCPs, CheProteins, as well as the flagella rotation direction.

Ans. Chemotaxis are relatively sensitive to small changes in the concentrations of chemical signals. Interaction among receptors are crucial for it. E coli swim up the concentration gradient of attractants whereas they swim down the gradient of repellant. It does so by the rotation of the flagella. Due to the counterclockwise rotation of flagella the clockwise rotation of E coli would occur. Swimming up a gradient of attractant causes a decrease in the probability of tumbling whereas swimming up a gradient of chemorepellant tends to an increase in the probability of tumbling. The final outcome is the attraction towards the attractant moving away from the repellant.
