CONFLICT

There are types of conflicts which are easily identifiable in our contemporary times. before the discussion of types, we have to understand in details that what is conflicts and how it occurs in day to day life. Conflict is an inevitable part of the life. we often get into conflicts with different scenarios. "Strike two things at the same time" the meaning itself is self explanatory. Conflict can be defined as the serious disagreement or argument regarding a topic.

TYPES OF CONFLICT

Following are the types of conflicts:

  • Inter-personal conflict

Interpersonal conflict refers to a conflict between two persons. we have varied personalities which usually results to incompatible opinions. It is a natural occurrence which can eventually helps individuals for maintaining healthy relationship and personal development. these type of conflicts can be resolved through some conflict resolution strategies such as avoiding, smoothing, forcing, confronting and compromising.

  • Intra-personal conflict

Intrapersonal conflicts occurs within an individual. This type of conflict can be quite difficult to handle. It will create mental pressure, tension and stress. These type of conflicts arise as a result of two or more goals or motives to be achieved at a time. It would be best to seek a way to let go of the anxiety through communicating with other people. Eventually, when you feel free from the situation, you can become more empowered as a person. To an extend it will helps you for the personal growth.

Intra-personal conflicts can again be classified into following ways:

  1. Approach-Approach conflict:

Such conflicts are not so harmful. In this type of conflict individual will have two positive desires at a time which are equally important and powerful. For instance, A person has two attractive job offers and he has to choose any one of the job. it will create inner conflict and lead to tension. but result will be good since both will improve satisfaction level.

2. Avoidance-Avoidance conflict:

It is entirely opposite from Approach-Approach conflict. This conflict involves two negative goals or mind set at at a time. this kind of conflict will be harmful to a great extend. In such cases, both are unwanted goals but he or she cannot move further without selecting any of these two. for example, An employee should do a work which he dislikes most or else he has to remain unemployed. If we cannot handle this conflict, it will become a big threat in future.

3. Approach-Avoidance conflict

This is also a most complex conflict and difficult to resolve using conflict resolution methods. Here the goal object will have both negative and positive valences at a time. The positive object attracts him most, but as he approaches towards the object, the negative object pull him backwards. For instance, A person is approaching to accept a job offer because the salary is attractive, at the same time risk involved in the job and mental pressure pull him back from the object.

  • Intra-group conflict

Intra-group conflicts can be occurs between individuals within a team. Misunderstanding and disbelieves will leads to intragroup conflicts. For example, if a team member having different personality from other members have different opinion too, it will constantly leads to intra group conflicts.

On the other hand, intra group conflict creates more ideas and it will eventually helps take the best decision on time. If the degree of conflict disrupts harmony among the members, then some serious guidance from a different party will be needed for it to be settled.

  • Inter-group conflict

Intergroup conflict takes place when a misunderstanding arises among different teams within an organization. For instance, If the purchasing team come with a conflict with accounts department it would be treated as inter group conflicts. Inter group conflicts arises due to different set of goals and interest of different department. in addition to this, competition will also be reason for inter group conflict.
