Currently reading the article "Fitness, but not physical activity, is related to functional integrity of brain networks associated with aging" by Voss, Weng, Burzynska, Wong and etc.. (article can be located online on websites such as Pubmed or etc...) This paper is very confusing to me and I need someone to explain the main points of this paper. A few question I have regarding this paper are:
Mainly need help summarizing the article because I read it 2-3 times and still don't understand exactly what the article is saying especially in the material and methods and results section of the paper. Not sure how they tested this experiment, the methods that were used or how to interpret the data that was obtained. PLEASE HELP!
Background information relating topic of interest:
Public health challenges like Alzheimer's disease are likely to surge along with growth in adults over age 65. This research is done to understand how physical exercise protects brain from the adverse effects of aging.
The problems with related Neuro degenerative conditions are associated with morbidity, mortality, loss of independence etc.
The Aim of this study was to empirically evaluate the independent relationships between physical activity and fitness with functional brain health among healthy older adults by measurements of functional connectivity of cognitively and clinically relevant resting state networks.
The methods used were Physical activity and health history assessment, cardiorespiratory fitness assessment, MRI acquistion, Data Processing using in house script library with tools from FSL 5.0.4 etc, FC analysis of resting state networks.
The subjects used were MRI data of healthy older adults of 65 years, 68%female and MRI data of college age adults of age 22 years.
The hypothesis used is measuring functional brain health by assessing the functional connectivity of brain networks observed during the resting state with functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Main result observed is cardiorespiratory fitness has a positive relationship with functional connectivity of several cortical networks associated with age related decline.
Methodology used was definitely good but complex an needs an extra attention to monitor every result.
As a result it is discovered this study suggests that the positive association of fitness with brain function can occur independent of habitual physical activity. Overall findings prove that cardiorespiratory fitness is an important factor in moderating the adverse effects of aging on cognitively and clinically relevant functional brain networks.
Summary:
This study replicates and extends previous research demonstrating a positive relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and FC of coginitive and clinically related brain networks observed during the resting state and which are vulnerable to adverse effects of aging.
PS: I summarized the study into small explanation. Detailed explanation requires more time as it is vast topic.
