The definition of organizational culture can be given as common values and shared principles which motivates and forms the behaviour of the organizational members. It is common awareness and understanding created by repeated practices, structure and reinforcement of values and beliefs of the organization. It is reflected in the systems and processes of the organization. The culture is shaped by defining common goals and objectives of the organization.  

The four important characteristics of the organizational cultures can be listed as

  • Shared norms based on customs and traditions developed in the organization
  • Shared values based on common beliefs and principles.
  • Basic set of assumptions with patterns of common behaviour
  • Subjective to change and dynamic

The various factors that influence the formation of organization culture are the social and educational forces in the society, the technological factors which define the habits and patterns of people and their attitude, economics forces which determine the development standards and the distribution of wealth among people. The external environment components of the organization and the innate beliefs, behaviour and attitudes of the members influence the organizational culture. They have effect on the goals and objectives and motivational forces shaping the behaviour of the members. The elements such as artefacts and espoused values acts as symbols and role models of the culture to reinforce the expected behaviour and patterns and inspire the members to emulate the culture and practice the promoted values.
